Kids Speak Out on Student Engagement
New ways of engaging students with use of technology and improved strategies is discussed in Kids Speak Out on Student Engagement. To be effective teachers, teachers must understand who they are teaching and how they are teaching. As a teacher, I spend time getting to know my students. By getting to know the students, I can tailor instruction to meet student needs and engage their interest. For instance, I have students who are serious athletes and are interested in how the body works. During a unit on the human body system, I created a lab where students measured their pulses, measured their blood pressure, tested their physical fitness ability and learned about the science behind these tests.
As a teacher I can commit to the following ways of engaging my students. Mixing it up creates opportunities for students to engage in a variety of ways. By mixing things up, all learning styles can be catered to. Learning about my clients is important for a teacher. Not only does learning about my students foster rapport but it allows opportunity to learn ways to engage students in the material. Another way to engage students is to provide student choice. A way to get to know students and to allow students the chance to invest in their learning is to provide choices. By providing choices students determine how they want to present themselves. Choice assignments can be used to learn about students. For example an information report using a variety of digital resources to present the information on a career of choice can show student aspirations.
3 Ways Colleges Use Instagram
In the article 3 Ways Colleges Use Instagram, the benefits of Instagram is discussed. Instagram is a photo and video based social media platform. Students may use Instagram to post their latest expedition to the beach or to share their prom dress. But Instagram can be used for more. At the primary and secondary level, Instagram can be used to engage students. By posting pictures from campus, students can feel engaged and connect with campus. But the difficulty with Instagram is the privacy of minors. Since students younger than college level are minors, privacy becomes a priority. However, there are strategies that students and teachers can use to protect students but still capture the essence of the desired emotion of the picture. For instance proper cropping and focusing can limit showing student faces.
I believe Instagram has benefits to schools. Campus culture can be fostered using Instagram. At Rancho Buena Vista, students participated in a chalk art contest. In the future, students can vote for Instagram favorite using the school hashtag and bring student art to a new platform. At the high school level, students are typically distant from their parents. Posting school activities, on a school Instagram account can allow parents the opportunity to view their child's life at school. It can also continue the conversation that was started in the classroom to the dinning room table.
Overall Reflection
The two articles emphasized my commitment to teaching. Teaching is not just a job but a commitment to students. To ensure that students are engaged, one must understand what engages students. What are students interested in, what do students need help with, and where students want to go, all help teachers create effective lessons. Instagram is disregarded as a social media platform with no value but that is simply not true when used appropriately. Students can use Instagram to share their artwork.
