Ch 1.
Quote: "The bridge between them- and what makes the concept of the new culture of learning so potent - is how the imagination was cultivated to harness the power of almost unlimited informational resources and create something personally meaningful. " Pg. 31 New Culture of Learning
This quote summarizes the moral to each of the stories in chapter one. This highlights the importance of imagination to learning.
Question: How can we convince society that imagination and play is an important part of learning?
Connection: In higher education, imagination is harnessed through choice. Students can be creative when they are given a choice and use their creative skills to explore concepts and topics.
Aha: It is important to utilize student creativity within the classroom. This can be harnessed in creative projects, and by providing students with choice in their learning.
Ch. 2
Quote: "The learning-based approach is that in the first case the culture is the environment, while in the second case, the culture emerges from the environment and grows along with it." Pg. 37 A New Culture of Learning
This quote explains the difference between the old and new culture of learning. To facilitate a learning environment suitable for developing 21st century skills, the environment must be dynamic with the users. The students and the teacher create and develop an environment that successfully cultivates creativity and learning.
Question: How do we bridge the old school with the new school of culture? How to evolve when the facilities do not?
Connection: EDSS530 tried to model a dynamic culture in which the students were involved in making their own community. By creating assignments that only limited the creative tool to use but the students had the choice of what they would do.
Aha: To facilitate a student choice assignment for students, I will have their final assessment be a presentation on a human body system. The system will be assigned but students will have a choice of what diseases they will also report on that is associated with that body system.
Ch. 3
Quote: "The important thing about the Harry Potter phenomenon is not so much what the kids were learning but how they were learning." Pg. 44 A New Culture of Learning
The way students learn in the 21st century is new and sometimes scary for the old generation. But this quote assures that learning can take place in a different format and to not be afraid of change.
Question: How can we facilitate lessons that support skills needed to survive in the 21st century?
Connection: EDSS 530 has been difficult for many students. Many students have been raised with the traditional style of education, but understand that the world has changed. The transition from traditional to modern can be a tumultuous change for many students.
Aha: As observed by the students in EDSS 530 there will be resistances to change in the way students learn. But it is important to make the change visible and to demonstrate the successes of modern style of education.
